'Lean On Me' Actor Arrested for Buying 200 POUNDS of Weed

The guy who starred as troubled youth Thomas Sams in the 1989 classic "Lean On Me" was arrested in Arizona for allegedly buying 200 pounds of pot from an undercover cop this week. Jermaine "Huggy" Hopkins has been charged with two felony counts of possessing, transporting and trying to sell marijuana. According to police, the 38-year-old actor lives in North Carolina ... but traveled to AZ to make the drug deal on Tuesday. Cops in Maricopa County say they set up the sting operation ... and after Hopkins took possession of the dope, they pulled over his SUV and arrested him. Cops say they found $100k in cash in the ride. Officials later searched Hopkins' Arizona apartment and claim they found an additional 100 pounds of weed. Police say Hopkins told them he got involved in the drug deal to provide a nice Christmas for his family. Hopkins is being held on $35,000 bond. If convicted, he faces up to 5 years in prison.

Black Author wins The Matrix Copyright Infringement Case

This little known story has met a just conclusion, as Sophia Stewart, African American author of The Matrix will finally receive her just due from the copyright infringement of her original work!!! A six-year dispute has ended involving Sophia Stewart, the Wachowski Brothers, Joel Silver and Warner Brothers. Stewart’s allegations, involving copyright infringement and racketeering, were received and acknowledged by the Central District of California, Judge Margaret Morrow presiding. Stewart, a New Yorker who has resided in Salt Lake City for the past five years, will recover damages from the films, The Matrix I, II and III, as well as The Terminator and its sequels.

She will soon receive one of the biggest payoffs in the history of Hollywood, as the gross receipts of both films and their sequels total over 2.5 billion dollars. Stewart filed her case in 1999, after viewing the Matrix, which she felt had been based on her manuscript, ‘The Third Eye,’ copyrighted in 1981. In the mid-eighties Stewart had submitted her manuscript to an ad placed by the Wachowski Brothers, requesting new sci-fi works..

According to court documentation, an FBI investigation discovered that more than thirty minutes had been edited from the original film, in an attempt to avoid penalties for copyright infringement. The investigation also stated that ‘credible witnesses employed at Warner Brothers came forward, claiming that the executives and lawyers had full knowledge that the work in question did not belong to the Wachowski Brothers.’ These witnesses claimed to have seen Stewart’s original work and that it had been ‘often used during preparation of the motion pictures..’ The defendants tried, on several occasions, to have Stewart’s case dismissed, without success.

Stewart has confronted skepticism on all sides, much of which comes from Matrix fans, who are strangely loyal to the Wachowski Brothers. One on-line forum, entitled Matrix Explained has an entire section devoted to Stewart. Some who have researched her history and writings are open to her story.

Others are suspicious and mocking. ‘It doesn’t bother me,’ said Stewart in a phone interview last week, ‘I always knew what was true.’Some fans, are unaware of the case or they question its legitimacy, due to the fact that it has received little to no media coverage. Though the case was not made public until October of 2003, Stewart has her own explanation, as quoted at aghettotymz.com :

‘The reason you have not seen any of this in the media is because Warner Brothers parent company is AOL-Time Warner…. this GIANT owns 95 percent of the media… let me give you a clue as to what they own in the media business… New York Times papers/magazines, LA Times papers/magazines, People Magazine, CNN news, Extra, Celebrity Justice, Entertainment Tonight, HBO, New Line Cinema, DreamWorks, Newsweek, Village Roadshow and many, many more! They are not going to report on themselves. They have been suppressing my case for years.’ Fans who have taken Stewart’s allegations seriously, have found eerie mythological parallels, which seem significant in a case that revolves around the highly metaphorical and symbolic Matrix series. Sophia, the Greek goddess of wisdom has been referenced many times in speculation about Stewart. In one book about the Goddess Sophia, it reads, ‘The black goddess is the mistress of web creation spun in her divine matrix.’Although there have been outside implications as to racial injustice (Stewart is African American), she does not feel that this is the case. ’This is all about the Benjamins,’ said Stewart. ‘It’s not about money with me. Eddie Murphy quits as Oscars host after gay row

Eddie Murphy quit Wednesday as host of this year's Oscars, a day after the producer resigned over anti-gay comments, leaving organizers scrambling three months before the awards season climax. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Tom Sherak announced Murphy's departure a day after producer Brett Ratner -- director of current box office hit "Tower Heist," in which Murphy stars -- quit as producer of the February show. "I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well," Sherak said in a statement. Murphy said: "First and foremost, I want to say that I completely understand and support each party's decision with regard to a change of producers for this year's Academy Awards ceremony. "I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job," he added in the Oscars statement. No immediate replacements were announced, but the twin departures will leave the widely-respected Academy scrambling to find replacements for the annual extravaganza, planning for which starts almost as soon as the last year's show is over. Murphy, named in September to Tinsel Town's top hosting job, was seen as a safe pair of hands after last year's Oscars co-hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco. The latter was notably criticized for a wooden performance. At the time he was chosen, Murphy, who gained fame on TV show Saturday Night Live in the early 1980s before breaking onto the big screen, said he was looking forward to the gig. "I am enormously honored to join the great list of past Academy Award hosts, from (Bob) Hope and (Johnny) Carson to (Billy) Crystal, (Steve) Martin and (Whoopi) Goldberg, among others," he said. But his withdrawal was not unexpected following that of Ratner, who has made a series of close-to-the-bone comments in recent days. Ratner, a prolific director and producer whose work also includes 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand," made the offending anti-gay comment at a discussion about "Tower Heist" last week, in response to a question about how he works. Then on Monday, he went on shock jock Howard Stern's show and made a series of remarks about his sex life and relationships with Hollywood actresses, including Linday Lohan and Olivia Munn. "Being asked to help put on the Oscar show was the proudest moment of my career," Ratner said in his resignation letter Tuesday. "But as painful as this may be for me, it would be worse if my association with the show were to be a distraction from the Academy and the high ideals it represents."

The Los Angeles Times commented in a blog: "Ratner not only embarrassed the academy by insulting legions of gay people (who are perhaps the Oscars' last remaining loyal demographic). "He also made himself look like even more of an artistic featherweight by making it clear that he views the hard work and preparation that most filmmakers put into their craft -- i.e. rehearsal time -- as being for chumps, not fast-talking smoothies like himself." Next year's Oscars show -- the 84th Academy Awards, at which Hollywood's most coveted prizes, the famous golden statuettes, are handed out -- is scheduled for February 26. READ MORE

No, I speak of Lady Gaga the music seller vs. Lady Gaga the brand. One of those two people is just fine. The other, well ...

First, the music pusher. Gaga's music is still selling just fine, relatively. Born This Way still sits at a comfortable No. 12 on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week. She also hasn't endured the biggest drop in single sales of late; according to the Billboard Hot 100 chart, that ignominy belongs to Kanye West, Jay-Z, Jason Derulo and Avril Lavigne. If those three artists aren't through—and they clearly are not—than Lady Gaga certainly can't be, either.

But Gaga did do some damage to her brand over the weekend (as well as provided a boost to Annie Lennox's gender-bending cred). I spoke to a half-dozen brand managers in music and other areas, and they all insisted that Gaga's choice alienated and confused her audience. For the record, in the branding world, that is bad.

"What Lady Gaga did left people confused as to who she is," branding consultant Amanda Guralski tells me. "She has developed a brand of outlandish clothing and outspokenness, being comfortable born the way you are, but the VMAs was a brand destroyer.

"The night was embarrassing for Lady Gaga. If I were her image and branding 
consultant, I would definitely have my work cut out for me. It only takes one appearance to make people question everything."

In other words, before this past weekend, Gaga had trained her monsters to expect flamboyant disco-Bauhaus-Muppet mashups, not Jersey Shore. Even worse, data shows that people may already have been sick of Gaga before Jo Calderone ever stumbled onto the VMA stage. I checked with the people behind the popularity gauge E-Score. They told me, "Her ‘overexposed' score is 38 and shows a steady upward trend."

Now, yes, that is considered bad: That's comparable to Donald Trump (38 percent) and Rebecca Black (36 percent).

One bright spot for Gaga: People may be turned off, but they're still curious. According to Yahoo! searches for Lady Gaga on Yahoo! are up more than 980 percent this week. Granted, searches for Adele are up more than 4100 percent, and Katy Perry searches are up more than 1000 percent, but 980 percent is nothing to be ashamed of.

Another year, another unbelievably action-packed Video Music Awards. As expected, viewers were treated to mind-blowing performances and several jaw-dropping surprises. The most unexpected moment came courtesy of Beyoncé Knowles, who not so subtly announced to the world that she and husband Jay-Z are expecting their first child.

When B unbuttoned her sparkly jacket and rubbed her belly with a knowing smile, after which the camera panned to a visibly elated Jay-Z and Kanye West cheering from the audience, the Nokia Theatre was bursting with warm and fuzzy well-wishes for the soon-to-be parents. And that very public moment of celebration was just the beginning.

When Beyoncé returned backstage to her dressing room, she was greeted by a team of people who enveloped the visibly happy star with hugs, cheers and congratulations.
